Getting Creative with Picky Eaters

There seems to be one in every family. Those darn picky eaters that cover their mouths when something new comes near and just when you think they are going to cave and give in, they turn and run for the woods!

I came across these Hefty Zoo Pals Rainforest Plates the other day and I thought, hmmm, let's see if we can play a little game....

With being a picky eater, Jack avoids eating anything green or any veggie for that matter and I wanted to see if I could get him to try new foods by covering up the animal with some new foods to try. In order to see what animal it is, Jack has to eat everything on his plate, or at least TRY to eat everything, including the new food or one of his not so favorite foods.

You can visit the Zoo Pals on the Carousel - this is where you can meet ALL the different Zoo Pals by clicking on an animal that's riding on the carousel or you can click the arrow to go through the animals one at a time and find out their likes, dislikes, talent and when they were born.  Below you'll meet...wait, what animal is it - we can't see it with all that food?!?

                                                                      OHHH, It's LARA the SNAKE!
Jack's favorite Peanut Butter and Toast...
but he's not a big fan of bananas!

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        OHHH, It's MARGO the PARROT!
Grilled Cheese, not one of Jack's favorites....
but he'll eat it w/ some creativity.

With the Rainforest Collection being brand new - the plates have the names of the animals on them. But, I just bought the Safari Collection yesterday and the plates do not have the names on it...which makes it kind of fun to visit the Carousel to find out the name. "If you try your green beans, we can see what the Alligator's name is on the Carousel."

See, it's kinda of fun!  I've had fun myself, preparing his plate and making sure the animal underneath is hidden. And it makes me feel good to know that my son is trying other foods and maybe, just maybe, one day he'll see, there's TONS of great foods out there that you haven't even tried yet!  I love pizza too Jack - but in MODERATION!

Here's to having fun with food and helping your picky eater try something new!

Products I used are available for purchase on Amazon!

  1. I love this idea. We have used the zoo pal plates before, but I never thought of covering the plate with food and letting them uncover it by eating. Very creative and fun. Thank you for sharing!
