when diagnosed with celiac disease. He is now a healthy
2 year old.
What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?
As we introduced solid food to Jacob, it was within 2 weeks of him eating one of the Gerber baby foods containing wheat that he was projectile vomiting, multiple times a day, every day and developed severe eczema. He lost 1 lb in 6 days.
When we finally went to the GI, he was so concerned with Jacob's appearance we went back for his endoscopy. It was by chance that he saw evidence of celiac disease. He said, that wasn't what he thought he would find, based on the symptoms and Jacob's appearance, but he showed us a picture from the scope and he said, "this right here should look like carpet and in Jacob, it looks more like tile."
Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?
No
How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?
Jacob is now a happy, healthy, and thriving toddler.
What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?
Take a deep breath! It is overwhelming at first and not the most convenient way of life, especially with little ones. Try to get connected with others in your area or online for support and information on navigating a gluten free diet. You are not alone!
WOW, that's all I can say! This is the youngest age I've heard of a child being diagnosed with celiac disease. Jacob, you are proof my sweet boy, that celiac disease can be triggered as soon as one is introduced to wheat/gluten. I'm so happy to see you smiling and growing!
