diagnosed with with
celiac disease at 3 years old.
What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?
A couple months before he was diagnosed, he complained that his belly hurt, his head hurt, and he was tired. He would also periodically throw up for no reason. He would also have leg pain, especially at night. He had a particularly bad episode after making Christmas cookies, and I took him to see a pediatric GI doctor the next day. I was essentially blown off like I was overreacting, and was told he just had reflux. He didn't fit the typical picture because he was very tall for his age, and appeared healthy. My gut instinct was that something was really wrong, and they eventually did lab work. His GI doctor now says that he always thinks of Miles, and now realizes that kids don't always fit the typical picture.
Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?
No.
How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?
His symptoms went away almost immediately. He is very compliant with his diet, and is trying to learn to read labels. He is still very tall for his age, and plays sports. He is a happy and active kid. He does sometimes struggle with feeling "different" and "left out" at social events, and is learning to deal with this as he gets older. His GI doctor is amazed that his annual lab work is always perfect!
What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?
Don't feel overwhelmed, it gets easier! Plan ahead, especially with traveling- but don't be afraid to travel. Try not to stress about it in front of your kids- they will take cues from you. If you're like me- don't blame yourself- it's nothing you did or didn't do that caused it- God is in control!!!
I'm so happy to hear Miles is doing so well! Thanks Mom for sharing his story!
