Sweet Faces of Celiac Disease: Meet Trevor

Trevor is 6 years old and was diagnosed with celiac disease
at 15 months old.

What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?

Stunted growth and weight loss (FTT), vomiting, diarrhea, distended belly

Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?

No

How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?

No longer a sickly little boy.. He is now thriving and growing big and strong. We made it through the first year in public school this past year. Things went great!

Trevor completely advocates for himself now. His teacher made the entire classroom nut free and gluten free. Trevor can order his own food at restaurants now and explains how he cannot have any gluten to the server because it makes him very sick. He has a couple close friends who ask questions and genuinely tried to learn a little about what he can and cannot eat which was great.
His tTg number is still below 1. He has been loving boy scouts and soccer. He usually picks his own snacks but the parents do try to bring gluten free things too. It has been a great year.

What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?

Reading labels becoming second nature after awhile. It definitely gets easier. The online gluten free community is so strong and very helpful.

WOW Trevor, you're doing AAA-MAZING!! I'm proud of you for advocating for yourself and others who live with celiac disease. And thanks to Trevor's momma, Ashley for creating a Facebook page to help others on their celiac/gluten-free journeys as well! Thank you to your family!! Have a great summer!
