Sweet Faces of Celiac Disease: Meet Ashton

Ashton is 3 years old and was diagnosed with celiac disease at 2 years old.

What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?

Sporadic vomiting - thinking it was a milk allergy we omitted milk products but vomiting continued. Weight loss - food aversion  (hungry but didn't want to eat), depleted energy - sleeping a lot, wouldn't want to walk/play. He would seem to stare right through you - brain fog.

Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?

Not yet. Parents being tested.

How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?

HUGE changes. Back on the growth charts.  Gained 15 LBS. in a year and a half since his diagnosis. He's a normal 3 year old with energy!

What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?

BREATHE!! It can be overwhelming. It is manageable and possible but does take monitoring and planning. Surround yourself with other parents through blogs and support groups who you can give tips.

Look at you Ashton! You're a healthy, big boy that's growing up BIG AND STRONG!

Yes, support is #1 on this journey - surrounding yourself with positive people that truly care and want to understand celiac disease and why one must live a gluten-free lifestyle is crucial to your child's mental and emotional health as well.

Have a great summer Ashton!
