Sweet Faces of Celiac Disease: Meet Adalyn

Adalyn is 9 years old and was diagnosed with celiac disease
at 5 years old.

What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?

Constipation, severe stomach aches, psoriasis of the scalp, lethargy, slow weight gain.

Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?

Paternal Grandmother

How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?

She has gained weight! She has always been small, but at barely 30 lbs in Kindergarten it was a concern. Having her on a GF and lactose free diet has changed everything. She is a "normal" active child now. She always had a pale complexion and bags under her eyes, now her cheeks get rosy! The biggest change has been the pain. She goes weeks being free of belly aches, which were debilitating at times.

What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?

Educate yourself, but slowly. It is overwhelming and can be information overload. Find a good doctor, that will listen and be there to offer their support and guidance. We have an amazing gastroenterologist!

So happy to hear Adalyn is free from her belly pain and her face is full of color and happiness!
