Sweet Faces of Celiac Disease: Meet Alli

Alli is 11 years old and was diagnosed with celiac disease when she was 8 years old.

What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?

Asthma, poor growth and bad immune system. She was actually diagnosed on accident through a blood test/screening for other autoimmune diseases.

Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?

How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?

Since her diagnosis, Alli jumped from the 5th percentile on the height and growth chart to 50th! He asthma is completely gone and we have had zero trips to the ER for lung/pneumonia issues. Socially, she was years behind her peers and today she has not only grown but matured significantly!

What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?

Take a deep breath. Gluten free is not as difficult as it first seems. Find local/small restaurants with environments you trust to have fun treats. And be a loud voice at school, so you know when to bring in a cupcake or cookie that looks as close to everyone else's or better!!

WOW, it sounds like you're doing wonderful Alli!! I hope you're having a great summer and keep taking good care of yourself sweet girl.
