17 months old.
What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?
Cam had an ear infection and was placed on antibiotics at 13 months old, and after the round of antibiotics he started throwing up to bile once a day until diagnosed at 17 months. He got down to 11 pounds and you could see his entire skeleton and doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong. He was anxious and depressed with no energy. He went through every GI test known to man for months until finally they did a celiac panel.
Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?
Not that we know of, but my husband is GF and does not want to eat gluten to officially get tested.
How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?
It has changed in every way! He put on a very quick 10 pounds in the month following the start of his GF diet and continued putting on weight and thrives to this day. He is happy go lucky and has a contagious zest for life! Whenever someone offers him food he always says, "Is this gluten free?" :)
What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?
It seems overwhelming at first, but it really is amazing how many new products come out daily! We have seen a surplus of new products even in our almost three years. Today we find a gluten free lifestyle easy and you develop your own tricks that never make your child feel left out. We are thankful that we know Cam has celiac disease because living in the unknown and watching him throw up to bile for months was much worse!
Cam, you're such a handsome young man! I'm so happy to see you smiling and no longer getting sick! I hope you're having a wonderful summer!
And yes Mom, I'm so thankful too! We were one of the lucky ones as Jack was diagnosed with celiac disease quickly. I'm thankful that it's a gluten-free lifestyle and no something where medication or surgery is required.
