Sweet Faces of Celiac Disease: Meet Ava

Ava is 10 years old and was just
recently diagnosed with celiac disease.

What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?

Severe cramping with headaches for a week at a time. In the past, this would happen 1-2 times per year. Frequency of occurrences increased this last year. Pediatrician always diagnosed it as constipation.

Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?

No

How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?

She rarely has cramps now but she's still healing so she still quite sensitive. She's taken an interest in cooking now that she knows her diet has to change. That's a plus! She's always read food labels for sugar and to check for "excessive unidentifiable ingredients" but now she's learning to study them even more. Sometimes she feels isolated due to her diagnosis but we are looking into ways for her to meet other kids with Celiac.

What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?

Connect with other celiac kids parents to learn, share challenges and get support. Don't look at a gluten-free diet as a diet that eliminates your favorite foods. So far we've been able to replace all our favorite foods with delicious gluten free options. It just takes time to find them so be patient.

Ava, I'm so happy you don't have headaches anymore! Your beautiful smile is glowing and it sounds like you are feeling so much better. I'm so proud of you for wanting to participate and learn about your gluten-free lifestyle. Keep it up and have a wonderful school year!!
