Sweet Faces of Celiac Disease: Meet Ellie

Ellie is 11 years old and was diagnosed with celiac disease
at 5 years old.

What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?

Failure to thrive- low birth weight as well as only staying in the 3-4th percentile in weight and 15-20th on height

Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?

Mother - diagnosed at age 40

How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?

At first it was very challenging but now we have found so many good foods for her to eat. She is now in the 50th percentile in weight and 75th percentile in height. In a period of one year - her weight went from 4th-25th percentile. It was amazing to watch the changes.

What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?

See a good dietician that understands celiac disease. Find a food support group whether it is online or local. You both will need the support it provides.

O sweet Ellie, you were a tiny little thing, weren't you?! I'm so happy you are healthy and growing! I hope you are doing well and continue to take good care of yourself.

Yes Mom, support, support, support! From family, friends and online support, like Raising Jack with Celiac. ;)

It's amazing how much is out there on the internet now. Eight years ago, there wasn't much on children with celiac disease, so I started this blog - but I'm happy to see there are more resources for families today.
