diagnosed when he was
2 years old with celiac disease.
What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?
Diarrhea several times a day. He lost a few ounces which prompted the testing.
Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?
None known, all immediate have been tested.
How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?
He doesn't miss much since he was so young, but he gets sad and sometimes cries when he sees things he would like to try or when someone brings a surprise treat somewhere. He is very fortunate to have friends and family that think of him, but he doesn't like being different and has started telling me it would be easier if he wasn't gluten free.
What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?
I think I cried off and on for the first few months. It does get easier once your child has their favorite staples established. It is hard when hey feel different but I am thankful everyday that Nick is smart, witty, athletic and most of all healthy now that he is on the gluten-free diet.
Nick, and sounds like you're doing awesome and I hope you've had a great summer. Keep it up and make the most of being gluten-free! You and Jack were diagnosed at the same age. :)
And yes Mom, I remember after Jack's diagnosis, I researched for two weeks and finally cried. I just needed to release. We don't want to see our children have to eat differently, but I know you, as well as myself, are so thankful that a gluten-free lifestyle is all our boys need.
You have a beautiful daughter and i can see how brave and courageous you are! i wish you and your children a long healthy happy life!
