Sweet Faces of Celiac Disease: Meet Briella

Briella is 8 years old and was
diagnosed at 5 years old
with celiac disease.

What symptoms was your child having before being diagnosed?

Briella had loose stools/diarrhea most of the time.  She had belly pains that would sometimes keep her in pain through the night.  We hadn't noticed yet, but she had stopped gaining weight and was beginning to become malnourished.  And, when we reflected back, we realized she had been  asking for bread (like a bun or roll) and then wouldn't eat it..... it looked good but she didn't want to eat it.

Any other family members diagnosed with celiac disease?

How has your child’s life changed since being diagnosed?

Briella is so resilient!  She is really great about having to have alternative snacks or miss out on something.  She still remembers how bad it made her feel (which is a blessing as far as her sticking to safe food choices).  She has taken a lot of responsibility for foods she consumes and loves to bake gluten free treats!

What advice would you offer a parent who’s child was just diagnosed with celiac disease?

Hang in there!  Find people who have gone through it and whom you can ask questions too.  Follow helpful Facebook pages for recipes and ideas.  You are NOT alone!  It is super overwhelming at first but over time it really will become easier!

Beautiful Briella, look at you, so happy and healthy. I hope you're enjoying your summer and keep baking those yummy gluten-free treats. :)
